Synopsis:
I received my M.A. in Romance Philology (1985) from the Università degli
Studi (Pisa), and my PhD in Hispanic Renaissance Linguistics (1991)
from the University of California (Santa Barbara). My teaching
and research interest have continued to develop in these two areas.
As a philologist, I am interested in diachronic and historical
linguistics and in the literary production of Spain during the
Middle Ages. As
a Renaissance scholar I am interested in Renaissance and Golden
Age linguistic theories on the origin and development of the vernaculars,
and in the impact of the New World on the European intellectual
thought
of the XVIth and XVIIth centuries. At UNC I teach several of the
required
courses for undergraduate Spanish majors (Spanish 50, Advanced
Grammar and Composition; Spanish 53, Latin American Civilization;
Spanish
71, Spanish Literature to 1700; Spanish 82, Masterpiece of Spanish
Literature). I also teach upper class and graduate courses (Spanish
145, Phonetics and Phonology; Spanish 126, History of Language;
Spanish 221-222, Morpho-Phonetics and Syntax of Old Spanish). Click
